Tsavo National Park is one of Kenya’s largest protected wildlife areas, covering a vast landscape between Nairobi and the Kenya Coast. It is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, each offering distinct terrain, wildlife patterns, and game viewing routes. The park forms a key link between coastal destinations such as Mombasa and Diani Beach and inland safari circuits including Amboseli and Nairobi.

Tsavo East is characterised by open plains, semi-arid bushland, and the Galana River system. It is known for large elephant herds, red-dust landscapes, and wide-ranging wildlife movement. Tsavo West is more varied, with volcanic hills, lava flows, springs such as Mzima Springs, and denser vegetation that supports different game viewing conditions.

The park is a Big Five destination, with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros present across the wider ecosystem. Elephant sightings are particularly prominent, while rhino are more concentrated in protected sanctuaries within Tsavo West. Other commonly seen species include giraffe, zebra, antelope, hippo, and crocodile, alongside a wide range of birdlife.

Tsavo is accessed primarily via road or rail from the Kenya Coast, making it suitable for both day safaris and multi-day itineraries. Game drives follow a network of park roads linking key viewing areas, rivers, and waterholes. The scale of the park creates a low-density safari environment, with long horizons and varied wildlife encounters depending on season and location.

Tsavo National Park is frequently combined with coastal stays in Mombasa, Diani Beach, Watamu, and Malindi, as well as inland parks such as Amboseli. It remains one of East Africa’s most significant wildlife regions due to its size, accessibility, and ecological diversity.
