Game Drives in Tsavo

Tsavo National Park

Game drives in Tsavo National Park offer extensive wildlife viewing across one of Kenya’s largest and most varied safari landscapes, spanning both Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The scale of the park allows for long, uninterrupted drives through open plains, river systems, and volcanic terrain.

Wildlife sightings commonly include large herds of elephant, particularly the well-known red-dusted elephants of Tsavo, along with Masai giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and a wide range of antelope species such as impala, kudu, and waterbuck. Predator sightings include lion, leopard, cheetah in some areas, and hyena, with wildlife movement varying by season and region within the park.

Tsavo is a Big Five destination, with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros present. Rhino are more concentrated in protected sections of Tsavo West, where conservation areas provide controlled viewing opportunities.

Game drives in Tsavo West often include stops at Mzima Springs, a natural water source fed by underground streams from the Chyulu Hills. Here, hippo and crocodile can be viewed in clear spring pools, along with abundant birdlife. The area also offers shaded viewpoints and walking paths in designated sections.

Other notable features include volcanic formations, lava flows, and the Shetani Lava Flow in Tsavo West, which adds a geological contrast to traditional safari scenery. In Tsavo East, drives often focus on open savannah, Galana River viewpoints, and seasonal waterholes that attract large concentrations of wildlife.

Game drives are typically scheduled in early morning and late afternoon, when animal activity is highest. Due to the size of the park, drives often cover significant distances, offering varied habitats and changing wildlife patterns within a single itinerary.
