Walking safaris in Tsavo National Park are conducted in designated areas and nearby conservancies under the supervision of trained guides and Kenya Wildlife Service rangers. These experiences are structured for safety and are not carried out across unrestricted game-drive zones.
Travelers explore bush tracks, riverine areas, and open terrain on foot, with interpretation of animal tracks, plant life, bird species, and smaller ecological details that are not visible from a vehicle. The most notable giraffe species found here is the Masai giraffe, the largest subspecies of giraffe. It is widely seen across Tsavo East and Tsavo West, recognised by its irregular, vine-like markings that extend down the legs. Tsavo is one of the key strongholds for this subspecies in Kenya due to the scale of the protected ecosystem.
One of the most distinctive animals linked to Tsavo, although not endemic, is the “red elephant” of Tsavo. These elephants are known for their red dust colouring, caused by the iron-rich soils of the region. Large herds are a defining feature of both Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
Walking safaris in Tsavo are generally used as a complementary activity alongside game drives. They form part of broader itineraries that combine coastal stays on the Kenya Coast with safari experiences inland, offering a different perspective of the ecosystem within a controlled and guided setting.
