Salt Lick Safari Lodge is one of Kenya’s most recognisable safari properties, located within the private Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary on the edge of Tsavo National Park. It is positioned between Mombasa and Nairobi, making it a strong inclusion for coastal or combined safari itineraries.
The lodge is known for its elevated design, with rooms built on stilts and connected by walkways above open bush and waterholes. This layout places travelers directly above active wildlife areas, where elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and antelope regularly gather. The waterholes are floodlit at night, allowing uninterrupted viewing from rooms, walkways, and public areas.
Accommodation consists of approximately 96 rooms, all with en-suite facilities and positioned for direct views over the sanctuary. The design focuses on proximity to wildlife rather than traditional resort layouts, with game frequently visible throughout the day and night.
The lodge forms part of a larger conservation area that borders Tsavo East and Tsavo West, offering access to one of Kenya’s key safari ecosystems. Wildlife includes the Big Five, with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros present within the wider Tsavo region, although sightings vary depending on area and conditions.
Key facilities include a central restaurant overlooking the waterholes, a bar and viewing deck, and guided game drives within the sanctuary. The experience is centred on observation rather than extensive lodge amenities, with wildlife viewing as the main focus throughout the stay.
Salt Lick is commonly used in combination with Kenya Coast itineraries, particularly from Diani Beach and Mombasa, as well as longer safari circuits linking Amboseli, Tsavo, and Nairobi.
