Barbara Mackenzie is a Travel Concierge with a passion for creating personalized luxury golf, wine, and safari tours that showcase the very best of South Africa.

Barbara Mackenzie was born in Austria and later made South Africa her home, building a career around two of her greatest passions: golf and hospitality. After spending 12 years owning and managing a golf guesthouse, she developed a strong understanding of what makes a golf holiday memorable, both on and off the course.

Her experience later expanded into wine tourism and tailor-made itinerary planning while managing operations on a wine farm in Stellenbosch, where she developed a deep appreciation for South Africa’s food and wine culture.

Today, Barbara specializes in creating golf, wine, and culinary experiences across South Africa. She enjoys helping travelers discover exceptional courses, local flavors, and unique destinations, ensuring every journey is as memorable as the stories guests take home with them.

Buhala Lodge

My most memorable trip...

“One of my most memorable golf experiences was a stay at Buhala Lodge many years ago, combined with the opportunity to play the remarkable Leopard Creek Country Club. Even today, I can picture sitting on the lodge veranda as elephants wandered down to the Crocodile River and the sun dipped below the bushveld horizon. It’s the kind of scene that stays with you long after you’ve left. Waking up the next morning to tee off in the same surroundings made the experience even more special. With wildlife just beyond the fairways and nature playing its own supporting role, it felt as though golf and safari had found the perfect partnership. “

Insider Tip

The Authority in African Golf & Safari Travel

My insider tip for golf in South Africa, particularly in the Cape, is simple: book the earliest tee time you can. There’s something special about being one of the first players on the course as the sun rises, the fairways begin to glow, and the day is just getting started. The courses are quieter, the greens are in excellent condition, and the sounds of nature provide a soundtrack that no clubhouse playlist can match. Before the temperatures rise and the pace of the day picks up, you can enjoy the course at its most peaceful. It’s a chance to take in the scenery, settle into your game, and appreciate everything that makes golf in the Cape so memorable. For me, there’s no better way to start a day on the fairways.
