On 28 May 2026, the Ascot Tours team visited Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch for a site inspection, and it quickly became clear why this property continues to stand out in the Cape Winelands. From the moment we arrived, there was a strong sense that Spier is designed for travelers who want more than just a farm stay. It is a destination on its own.

More Than Just a Farm Stay
One of the first things that stood out was the sheer variety of experiences available on the estate. Guests can spend their day exploring art walks across the property, relaxing at the heated outdoor pool, joining Segway vineyard tours, enjoying wine tastings, or cycling around the farm with complimentary bicycles provided by the hotel.
Families are especially well catered for, with a dedicated kids club, while groups and couples also have plenty of space and activities to enjoy together. There is also a fully equipped gym and a wellness spa that has been recognized by Condé Nast Traveler, which adds another level to the guest experience.

Rooms and Suites
The hotel currently offers 80 rooms, including family-friendly room categories and a selection of unique suites personally designed by the owner of Spier Wine Farm. The design throughout the property feels thoughtful and connected to the surroundings. I especially loved the riverside rooms, where you can hear the water flowing nearby. It gave the rooms a very calm atmosphere and made the stay feel even more connected to nature.
The suites were another talking point during the visit. Personally, I found the suite design absolutely stunning and unlike anything you would expect from a traditional Winelands property. At the same time, it is definitely a style that guests will either completely love or not connect with at all, which honestly makes it even more memorable. Another detail guests appreciate is that the complimentary minibar is included, which adds value and convenience to the stay.
Spier is also making a conscious effort to prioritize the hotel guest experience. Day visitors are limited, and hotel guests receive preference when booking restaurants and spa treatments. The swimming pool is reserved exclusively for hotel guests, which creates a more private and relaxed atmosphere throughout the property.

Dining at Spier
Dining is another major highlight. Spier offers multiple dining experiences across the estate, including three different bars, each with its own menu and atmosphere. The rooftop bar operates seasonally and adds another dimension to the guest experience during the warmer months. Pre-booked picnics are highly recommended and remain one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the farm surroundings.
Farm-to-Fork Philosophy
The farm-to-fork approach is visible throughout the property. Spier sources ingredients directly from its own gardens and livestock, creating a strong connection between the farm, restaurants, and guest experience. The shops on the estate also follow this philosophy, giving visitors access to locally produced products and fresh ingredients.

Location for Touring and Golf
From a touring perspective, Spier Hotel is exceptionally well positioned. The Cape Winelands region is home to world-class golf courses such as Stellenbosch Golf Club, De Zalze, and Pearl Valley Golf Estate, making Spier Hotel an excellent base for travelers wanting to combine Winelands experiences with golf in the Cape.
It is centrally located for Cape Town itineraries and works particularly well for golf travelers. Erinvale Golf Club near Somerset West is within easy reach, while the Overberg region and Arabella Golf Club can easily be incorporated into longer itineraries. The surrounding Stellenbosch wine region also offers access to many nearby wine farms and experiences, making Spier an ideal base for exploring the Cape Winelands.

Personally, I found the property stunning. It manages to feel relaxed and family friendly while still offering the level of service and experience that works perfectly for couples, groups, and premium golf itineraries.
For travel agents looking to add a Winelands stay that combines activities, dining, wellness, and easy touring access, Spier Hotel is a strong option within the South African market.
