Rhino #181 has Safely Arrived in Garamba National Park

We are very pleased to announce that Rhino #181 and 23 other southern white rhinos have safely arrived in Garamba National Park in the DRC. Rhino Rewild is a conservation program led by African Parks that focuses on returning rhinos to safe, well-managed protected areas across Africa. The initiative forms part of an ambitious, multi-national effort to relocate 2,000 white rhinos, representing the largest wildlife translocation project in human history.

Through its conservation and restoration initiative, Golfing for Change, Ascot Tours supports this landmark conservation effort, contributing directly to the journey of Rhino #181. This project is spearheaded by Maryna Blomerus, Ascot Tours’ Financial Manager, who has played a key role in coordinating the company’s involvement. This support forms part of African Parks’ Rhino Rewild initiative, an ambitious, continent-wide program to rewild more than 2,000 white rhinos into safe, well-managed protected areas.

Relocation of Rhino #181

The relocation of Rhino #181 forms part of a broader effort to restore rhino populations to secure, well-managed landscapes where they can live under natural conditions. In its most recent phase, African Parks successfully translocated 24 southern white rhinos to Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking a major step in re-establishing rhino populations in Central Africa.

Rhino #181 is currently settling into a carefully monitored protected area, where conservation teams are closely observing its health, behavior, and adaptation to the new environment. The rhino was professionally dehorned prior to relocation as a safety precaution, allowing it to roam freely without risk from poaching.

It has already begun acclimatizing to its new home, interacting with other rhinos, exploring its territory, and contributing to the long-term stability and genetic diversity of the population. This ongoing monitoring ensures that Rhino #181 receives the support needed for a successful transition to life in the wild.

Building on a previous reintroduction in 2023, when white rhino returned to Garamba after more than two decades of absence, this latest translocation strengthens the founding population and supports the establishment of a genetically viable breeding group. This work also helps restore the ecological role once fulfilled by the now functionally extinct northern white rhino.
