Hermanus is one of the world’s most established whale watching destinations, located along the Cape Whale Coast, approximately 90 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. The town is best known for seasonal visits by Southern Right Whales, which migrate to the sheltered waters of Walker Bay to calve and nurse their young.
The main whale watching season runs from June to November, with peak sightings typically between August and October. During this period, whales are frequently visible from the shoreline, often at close range, making Hermanus one of the few destinations globally where land-based whale watching is highly reliable.
Land-based viewing is the most accessible option. The cliff paths stretching for several kilometres along Walker Bay provide multiple vantage points, particularly around the Old Harbour area and Gearing’s Point. Sightings can include breaching, tail slapping, and mother-calf interactions close to shore, depending on sea conditions.
Boat-based whale watching operates from the Hermanus/New Harbour area and offers closer offshore encounters under licensed operators. These excursions provide a different perspective of whale behaviour, including underwater movement and surface interaction, subject to weather and sea state conditions. Trips are regulated to maintain safe distances from marine life.
Travelers should note that whale activity is seasonal and not guaranteed outside peak months. Weather can influence both visibility and sea conditions, particularly for boat excursions, which may be rescheduled for safety reasons. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for cliff path viewing, and advance booking is advised for boat trips during peak season.
Hermanus also integrates easily into Cape golf itineraries, allowing for half-day whale watching combined with afternoon tee times at nearby courses such as Hermanus Golf Club or Arabella Golf Club.
