Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai

Gansbaai

Gansbaai, located along the Cape Whale Coast approximately 2 hours from Cape Town International Airport, is regarded as one of the primary global locations for shark cage diving. The activity takes place offshore near Dyer Island and Shark Alley, an area known for frequent sightings of Great White Sharks alongside other marine species such as seals and seabirds.

Shark cage diving operates year-round, although conditions are generally most favourable between April and September when sea visibility can improve and swell conditions are more stable. Sightings remain possible throughout the year, as the marine ecosystem in this region supports consistent shark activity.

Trips depart early in the morning from Kleinbaai Harbour, with a short boat transfer to the dive site. Once anchored, a reinforced cage is lowered into the water, allowing participants to view sharks at close range from within the safety of the structure. No prior diving experience is required, and full briefing and safety equipment are provided by licensed operators.

Travelers should note that ocean conditions can vary significantly, and departures are always weather dependent. Motion sensitivity should be considered due to boat travel in open water. Operators typically provide wetsuits and safety gear, and most experiences last between two and four hours at sea, depending on conditions and wildlife activity.

Shark cage diving is often combined with Cape Whale Coast or Garden Route golf itineraries, particularly when based in Hermanus or Kleinmond, allowing for same-day or short transfer access to Gansbaai before continuing to nearby golf courses such as Arabella Golf Club or Hermanus Golf Club.
