Chobe River Boat Cruise

Chobe National Park

Renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa, Chobe is especially famous for river safaris along the Chobe River in Botswana. Boat cruises allow for close encounters with elephants bathing, crocodiles sunning, and vast herds coming to drink at sunset. The park is also rich in birdlife and predators, offering excellent game drives.

The Chobe River forms the northern boundary of the park and is particularly famous for its immense elephant population, with herds of up to 100 elephants frequently seen wading into the water or swimming between the river’s islands. During the dry season (May to October), wildlife congregates in large numbers along the river, making it one of the most reliable spots in Africa to see elephants in such abundance. Hippos are often seen submerged in the shallows or feeding on aquatic grasses, while large Nile crocodiles bask on the sandbanks or silently patrol the waters. Buffaloes, sable antelope, and puku (a semi-aquatic antelope rarely seen elsewhere) can also be seen on the floodplains.

The Chobe River is equally famous for its birdlife, with over 450 recorded species. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of African fish eagles, malachite and pied kingfishers, herons, African skimmers, jacanas, and saddle-billed storks. The sight of a fish eagle swooping down to catch prey or a kingfisher hovering above the water is an unforgettable highlight.

Predators such as lions and leopards are occasionally seen near the riverbanks, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, when they come down to drink or hunt. While rarer from the water than on game drives, such sightings are thrilling and unexpected bonuses. Chobe boat cruises typically last two to three hours and are offered in both morning and late-afternoon time slots. The afternoon cruise is especially popular due to the golden lighting and high likelihood of animals gathering at the water’s edge as the day cools. Larger double-deck boats are available for group tours, while smaller, private vessels cater to more intimate photographic experiences.
