Located in northern Tanzania, just south of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a rare gem on the African safari circuit. Dominated by the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, this conservation area is one of the only places in the world where your clients can spot all of the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo – in one day, within the confines of a single, dramatic landscape.
The crater’s unique topography creates a self-contained wildlife haven. Thousands of different species inhabit the 260 km² floor. These include the endangered black rhino, massive bull elephants, and powerful lion prides. The crater’s rich grasslands and soda lakes also attract flocks of flamingos, large herds of zebra and wildebeest, and a healthy population of spotted hyenas. The density and diversity of game make every game drive an action-packed experience.
June through October is widely considered the best time for a Big 5 safari in Ngorongoro thanks to clear skies, cooler temperatures, and increased visibility. However, even during the green season, the crater offers exceptional game viewing, as animals don’t migrate out of this enclosed area. It’s also during these quieter months that your clients can enjoy the crater’s beauty with fewer vehicles and softer light.
