When golfers dream of South Africa, iconic names like Leopard Creek or Sun City often spring to mind. And while those are undeniably spectacular, there’s another region that, in my decades of experience crafting bespoke golf tours with Ascot Tours, consistently delivers an unparalleled blend of world-class golf, breathtaking scenery, and diverse experiences: the magnificent Garden Route. Stretching along South Africa’s southern coastline, this verdant paradise is more than just a collection of pretty towns; it’s a golfer’s nirvana. If you’re seeking a journey that tantalises every sense, where each drive (both on and off the course) reveals a new perspective, then allow me to share some of my personal itinerary secrets for unlocking the magic of the Garden Route.

More Than Just Golf
What sets the Garden Route apart is its sheer diversity. One moment you’re teeing off with the Indian Ocean crashing dramatically below, the next you’re navigating fairways carved through ancient indigenous forests, and later, you might be sipping exquisite local wine overlooking tranquil lagoons. This explains why it’s a perennial favourite among our Ascot Tours clients. Championship golf courses, many designed by game legends, abound in the region. However, the experience is not limited to the 18th hole. It’s about the coastal towns like Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, the adventure activities from whale watching to bungee jumping, the gourmet food scene, and the warm hospitality.

Our Recommended “Must-Play” Courses
While every Ascot Tours itinerary is tailor-made, certain courses are cornerstones of any serious Garden Route golf pilgrimage:
Fancourt Estate (George)
Fancourt Estate (George) is home to three courses designed by Gary Player, including The Links (consistently ranked No. 1 in South Africa and a formidable test), Montagu, and Outeniqua. Fancourt isn’t just a golf resort; it’s an institution. We often recommend a multi-night stay here to truly savour the experience, perhaps playing two of the courses and enjoying the estate’s luxurious amenities.
Pinnacle Point Estate (Mossel Bay)
Designed by Peter Matkovich and Darren Clarke, this clifftop masterpiece offers some of the most dramatic ocean views you’ll ever encounter on a golf course. Several holes play daringly along the cliff edge. It’s a visual spectacle and a thrilling challenge. We ensure our clients have ample time to soak in the views, perhaps with a post-round drink at the stunning clubhouse.
Simola Golf & Country Estate (Knysna)
Overlooking the Knysna Lagoon and Heads, this Jack Nicklaus Signature course is a visual delight and a superb test of golf. The course consistently maintains excellent conditioning, while the undulating fairways and strategic bunkering ensure constant challenge. We often pair a round here with explorations of Knysna itself.
Pezula Championship Golf Course (Knysna)
Another clifftop marvel, Pezula offers a different but equally breathtaking experience to Pinnacle Point. With sweeping views of the Indian Ocean and the Knysna Lagoon, its varied layout winds through fynbos landscapes. It’s a course that rewards strategic play.

The Perfect Garden Route Golf Week
To give you a taste, here’s how a week-long Ascot Tours Garden Route golf adventure might unfold (remember, this is just a starting point for your tour!):
Days 1-3: George & Fancourt: Arrive at George Airport and transfer to Fancourt. Settle in and play the Montagu or Outeniqua course. Day two, tackle the formidable Links (we can arrange caddies who know every nuance). Airport, and on day three, you could either play a morning round on your preferred Fancourt course again or explore George, followed by an afternoon drive to Knysna.
Days 4-5: Knysna: Check into a luxury boutique hotel overlooking the lagoon. Play Simola, enjoying its elevated views. The next day, take on Pezula, followed by a sunset cruise through the Knysna Heads. Enjoy the vibrant waterfront dining scene.
Days 6-7: Plettenberg Bay: Drive to Plettenberg Bay, perhaps stopping at a wildlife sanctuary en-route (like Birds of Eden or Monkeyland). Play a round at Goose Valley or Plettenberg Bay Country Club for a different feel. For the grand finale, drive towards Mossel Bay for a breathtaking round at Pinnacle Point. Conclude with a farewell dinner overlooking the ocean.
