Westlake Golf Club is a premier 18-hole parkland-style course nestled in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. Situated against the slopes of the Silvermine Mountains, the course offers panoramic views and a tranquil setting, making it one of the most popular golfing destinations in the region.
The original nine-hole course was designed and laid out by the club’s founding members, with significant contributions from “Oupa” Harrison and Mr. H.B. “Pop” Lee. In 1934, the club appointed architect Dr. D.C. Murray to design an additional nine holes, transforming Westlake into an 18-hole course. Dr. Murray’s design closely resembles the current layout, which runs along the gradient of the mountain, providing a unique and challenging golfing experience.
Established in 1932, Westlake Golf Club has evolved over the years, with its members playing a significant role in its design and development. The course features lush fairways lined with towering pine trees, many of which have been shaped by the prevailing south-easterly winds, adding character and challenge to the layout. The fairways are predominantly Kikuyu grass, while the greens are composed of Poa Annua, providing a delicate yet rewarding putting surface.
The course is known for its interesting and user-friendly design, incorporating several doglegs and strategic elements that cater to golfers of all skill levels. The par-four 12th hole stands out as the signature hole, featuring a sharp dogleg left with a fairway lined by massive pine trees and a small, well-guarded green. Another notable hole is the par-four 18th, the most challenging on the course, which offers views over False Bay to the Helderberg Mountains from the dogleg turn.
Westlake Golf Club boasts comprehensive facilities, including a welcoming clubhouse with a bar and restaurant, a pro shop, and practice areas such as a driving range, putting green, and chipping area. Golf carts, pull-carts, caddies, and club rentals are available to enhance the playing experience. The club also offers amenities like locker rooms, showers, and banquet facilities, catering to both individual golfers and corporate events.
